Glenn Miller Old Time Radio Program Glenn Miller
Glenn Miller was born in 1904 and is assumed to have died in the English Channel in 1944. Born in Iowa, he gained a love of music, and in high school formed a band, and started playing a new style called dance band music. He had mixed success in his early career. He composed perhaps his most popular hit Moonlight Serenade, and played with other up and coming musicians like Benny Goodman. But he was also noted to be a mediocre trombonist. And it may be that he occasionally had to pawn his trombone to make ends meet. In 1929 he played with Red Nichols on two major jazz pieces, and broke a jazz/race barrier by playing with both blacks and whites (Miller was white). In the late 1930s Glenn decided that he needed a new sound, and worked with creating a new style for the clarinet. Finally Glenn had widespread appeal. His records were in almost every jukebox across the country, and he was a constant on the radio. It was during this time that he recorded "Chattanooga Choo Choo", Tuxedo Junction, Pennsylvania 6-5000 and others. At the height of his popularity Glenn decided to join the army. He was too old to be drafted, but he convinced the military that he would be an asset to the forces if he were allowed to modernize their band. He was transferred to England where his Army Band played over 800 shows. He was flying to the newly liberated Paris to perform in 1944 when it is assumed that his plane went down. These episodes of his show are recorded in MP3 format
and are only as good as the original recording. They are not of
nearly as good quality as buying a CD or downloading the songs from
itunes or Amazon. If you are interested in his music, we recommend
purchasing a CD:
