Goldbergs Old Time Radio Program The Goldbergs 15 minute comedy episodes "There she is, folks--that's Molly Goldberg, a woman with a place in every heart and a finger in every pie."
Gertrude Berg wrote, directed, produced and starred in the show. Quite simply without Berg there is no Goldbergs. She borrowed from her own life, but even moreso on her many trips to the Bronx to visit friends and just wander around getting good script material. She was so tied to the show for so long that many people thought her real name was Molly Berg. Part of the success has to be contributed to her perfectionist attitude. For example if the script called for scrambling eggs in a kitchen, she would literally scramble eggs to get the correct sound. Or, I imagine much to the chagrin of the actors working on the show, she would have an actor repeat a line over, and over, and over, AND over until she was happy with it. Yet through this, she could also ad lib great lines, or in one case write an entire episode in eight minutes (a guest star actor couldn’t make the show, so a new script was needed…fast.) Over time the Goldbergs aged, their children grew
up, got married, in short from 1931 to 1945 the characters changed
as America changed. The Goldbergs even moved from the city to the
suburbs, just like America was doing during this time, and struggling
to maintain their roots. Other cast members include Philip Loeb as husband Jake Goldberg, Arlene McQuade as daughter Rosalie Goldberg, Larry Robinson as son Sammie Goldberg, and Eli Mintz as Uncle David.
