Jack Armstrong Old Time Radio Program Jack Armstrong Old Time Radio Program Adventure/ Superhero, kids 15 minutes episodes
Jack Armstrong, The All-American Boy, centered around the thrilling adventures of Jack Armstrong, hero of Hudson High. While the early focus of the show was the prodigious athletic prowess of Jack, constantly saving the day for Hudson, it soon turned to Jack's globetrotting feats of derring-do. Accompanied by his cousins Billy and Betty Fairfield, and eventually by Uncle Jim Fairfield, Jack was equally at home defeating foes on the Amazon or the on African veldt. Jack and Uncle Jim were portrayed as manly heroes, while Billy and Betty, while the same age as Jack, were played as ingenuous and hapless. Although the trio was ostensibly high-school students, they rarely, if ever, attended classes or cracked a book, much to the dismay of the mothers of the juvenile audience. The story lines generally ran over many episodes, and were frequently resolved with the "then they all got hit by a truck" variety of denouement. The last year of the series was retitled "Armstrong of the SBI", when Jack Billy and Betty finally graduated from 17 years of high school (possibly prolonged by their study habits), and were recruited by the Scientific Bureau of Investigation. The move of the heroes into adulthood was not taken well by their fans, and the show ended a year later. Sponsored by Wheaties, the show shamelessly promoted Armstrong-related premiums to entice audiences to buy the cereal. The series was considered to be one of the most popular juvenile adventure series on radio, and ran from July, 1933 to June 1951. |
