Little Orphan Annie Old Time Radio Program Little Orphan Annie Old Time Radio Program Kids/Adventure 15 minute adventure episodes Based on Harold Gray’s comic strip, which was influenced by the sinister James Whitcomb Riley poem "Little Orphant Annie" (1885), Little Orphan Annie was first broadcast in April of 1931. The first of the children’s afternoon serials, Annie was immensely popular with its young audience, who thrilled to the adventures of the perpetual 10-year old. Adopted by the Silo family in rural Tomkins Corners, Annie spent her time suppressing evildoers in the tiny town, with the assistance of her dog Sandy and faithful companion Joe Corntassel. She later branched out to take on the forces of evil throughout the world, her efforts often aided by various other crime-fighting children.
Recurring characters included Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks. billionaire wartime military-industrialist with a heart of gold, and his sidekick, Punjab the Giant, both of whom first appeared in the Gray comic strip. Gray was so incensed by Roosevelt’s New Deal policies that he killed off Warbucks in the comic strip, and only revived him when he heard that Roosevelt had died. The show was initially, and memorably sponsored by
Ovaltine, which heavily promoted Annie premiums. Before its
final broadcast in 1943, Ovaltine abandoned Annie in favor
of Captain Midnight.
