Mary Noble, Backstage Wife Old Time Radio Program Backstage Wife
And now, Backstage Wife, the story of Mary Noble and what it means to be the wife of a famous star. As stated in the tagline that begins each episode, this series is about Mary Noble, an Iowa girl who moved to New York and met and married a matinee idol. The stories detail the trials and tribulations of her inordinately exciting, typically soap opera existence. On an average day Mary deals with assorted villains, homicides, blackmail and vicious, jealousy-crazed rivals while from the sidelines she is forced to endure the never-ending pursuit of her husband by ambitious and lovesick starlets. The series ran from August of 1935 to January 1959, and was conceived and written by Hummert Radio Productions, the soap opera/mystery factory created and led by the team of Frank and Anne Hummert, authors of the earlier successful serials Just Plain Bill and Betty and Bob. The Hummerts were also responsible for a large number of other radio shows, including Mr. Keen, Mr. Chameleon, Manhattan Merry-Go-Round. The Romance of Helen Trent, Stella Dallas, and Ma Perkins. Vivian Fridell, who originated the role, plays Mary in these episodes, which were first broadcast from 1939 to 1941, in the early years of the shows association with NBC. The role of Larry Noble, Marys not-so-faithful husband is played by Ken Griffin.
