Our Miss Brooks Old Time Radio Program
Our Miss Brooks
30 minute comedy show
The radio situation comedy, Our Miss Brooks,
was a popular and critical hit from its first airing in July, 1948.
The show was a perfect vehicle for star Eve Arden, who had made
a steady rise from B-movie obscurity to an Academy Award nomination
for her role in Mildred Pierce in1945. Her appearances on
Danny Kaye’s short-lived radio program displayed her comedic talent
and quick wit, and made her a natural choice for the role of sardonic,
underpaid high school English teacher Connie Brooks.
Arden's portrayal of the character was so well-received
by teachers that she was made an honorary member of the National
Education Association, received a 1952 award from the Teachers College
of Connecticut's Alumni Association "for humanizing the American
teacher," and was even offered teaching jobs.
Arden’s efforts were made easier by the quality of
the rest of the cast. The role of Philip Boynton was played unerringly
by Jeff Chandler, Academy-Award nominated actor best know for his
role of Cochise opposite Jimmy Stewart in Broken Arrow (1950). Gale
Gordon, who had played Mayor LaTrivia on Fibber McGee and Molly,
will remain unforgettable as Principal Osgood Conklin. Other members
of the cast included Richard Crenna, Jane Morgan, and Leonard Smith.
Our Miss Brooks premiered as a television series
in 1952, also starring Eve Arden and Gale Gordon. The radio show
ended its run in 1957, outlasting its television counterpart by
a year.
The witty writing and skilled cast made Our Miss Brooks one of the
few radio situation comedies that have stood the test of time. It
is still as funny and engaging as it was when it premiered over
half a century ago.
