This radio drama anthology series first aired in 1948 as
a summer replacement show, but proved so popular that it made the
regular rotation and ran until 1950. While each week it had a new
story, characters, and setting, the starring roles often went to
John Larkin and Jan Miner. Miner did such a good job in the suspenseful
premiere episode Long Distance that she was brought
back frequently, and it gave her career a bit of a jump start. (Many
of us know her for her role as Madge the manicurist
in those 1970s Palmolive commercials.) The episodes usually dealt
with tense life and death situations, often with complex moral issues
at stake. Radio City Playhouse has been favorably compared to such
old time radio classics as Suspense and Lux Radio Theater. And with
writers such as: Paul Gallico, Cornell Woolrich, Ray Bradbury, Stephen
Vincent Benet, Cornell Woolrich, and Agatha Christie its little
wonder why. The show was narrated and directed by Harry W. Junkin.
If you want high quality ½ hour dramas, this
is a great program to listen to. There is no substitute for a fine
story expertly told.
