Space Patrol Old Time Radio Program Space Patrol Old Time Radio Program "High adventure in the wild reaches of space! Missions of daring in the name of interplanetary justice!" So began each episode of Space Patrol, the short-lived children’s radio program broadcast in the early 1950s. Space Patrol capitalized on the popularity of science fiction shows like "Flash Gordon" and "Captain Video", and various cowboy westerns to translate the popular frontier justice format to the vast lawless reaches of interplanetary space. Centered around Buzz Corey, Commander-in-chief of the Space Patrol, and his efforts to avert disaster and maintain law and order in the solar system, the show occasionally involved his defeat of arch-nemeses such as Dr. Ryland Scarno, Master Criminal. Corey’s sidekick in these adventures was the young, eager, and often hapless Cadet Happy, who was given to such outbursts as "Smokin’ Rockets, Commander!". Space Patrol was also a television series during the Period, starring the same actors as the radio series. The show featured miraculous technology of the future, such as the space-o-phone and the brain-o-graph, and during its commercials, shamelessly hawked toys and merchandise tied to the action of the show. "Buzz Corey will send you a real, honest-to-goodness Space Patrol space-o-phone set". All you had to do was to send 25 cents and a box top from the sponsor’s product. Ziff-Davis published two editions of a Space Patrol comic book, and at least two records were produced in the early 1950s, on which were recorded "prequels" to the radio and tv episodes for Commander Buzz and Cadet Happy. This collection contains 97 episodes of Space Patrol, from October 1952 to March 1955, and includes a cut from one of the Space Patrol records describing how Captain Corey became Commander of the Space Patrol. |
