Suspense Theatre Old Time Radio Program Suspense Theatre Old Time Radio Program Combined set (CDs 1-10) 30 minute drama episodes
Both aptly named and critically acclaimed, Suspense Theatre held radio audiences enthralled from 1942 to 1962. Throughout its run, Suspense generally adhered to a format of thrillers--and occasionally horror and science fiction tales--in which ordinary people found themselves in extraordinary circumstances; the drama centered around their efforts to extricate themselves from these circumstances. Many of its consistently high-quality episodes are still considered classics of the golden age of radio, including Alfred Hitchcock’s "The Lodger", H.P. Lovecraft’s "The Dunwich Horror", and Orson Wells’ "The Hitchhiker". Several episodes were eventually made into feature-length films, including "Donovan’s Brain" (the 1953 film starred Nancy Davis, aka Mrs. Ronald Reagan), and "Sorry, Wrong Number", which lead to an Academy Award nomination for star Barbara Stanwyck, and was later adapted as a made-for-television movie starring Loni Anderson in 1989. The Hollywood luminaries who starred in Suspense Theatre episodes include Agnes Moorhead, who will forever be tied to her "Sorry, Wrong Number" role of Mrs. Elbert Stevenson, which earned her the title of "First Lady of Suspense", Ronald Colman, Charles Ruggles, Cary Grant, Frederic March, Herbert Marshall, Charles Laughton, Humphrey Bogart, Lucille Ball, Gregory Peck, Henry Fonda, Olivia De Havilland, Peter Lorre, Burt Lancaster and James Stewart. Many of the major film stars of the day asked to be included in the casts of the show, and of those who were included, many asked for a return engagement. Radio luminaries, also, were featured in its broadcasts, including Jim and Marian Jordan (Fibber McGee and Molly) in "Back Seat Driver". Other personalities, including comics Jack Benny and Red Skelton were cast against type in serious dramas. The cancellation of Suspense, and Yours, Truly Johnny Dollar, in 1962 is considered by many to be the end of the Golden Age of Radio. |
